Are you supporting someone who is recovering from trauma?

Dealing with the aftermath of trauma is horrible.  It's horrible for the person themselves, but also for those who are supporting them, whether you are a friend, family member, or a colleague.

You witness the struggle, the distress, the mood swings, the despair, and the shut-downs.

You see the battle with irrational thoughts, the momentary freezes, the flashes of anger, and the moments of sickening dread, although the traumatising events or circumstances are over.

It's confusing, but it's important to know that these responses are entirely normal and expected for someone who is recovering after trauma.  It's hugely distressing for them, and really difficult for us to respond to helpfully, when it happens.

In my work as a trauma therapist, I see family members, friends, and work colleagues desperately trying to find the right words, do the right things, and help the person they value so much, get back on track.

We want them to enjoy life again, pick up the activities they once enjoyed, have a laugh and a natter with us, and get back to happy, healthy normality.  We want to reconnect, be there for them, and make it OK again.

But we don't know how to do it, and too often we feel that we're doing or saying the wrong thing, making it worse, or not helping at all.  We feel as if we are on a knife edge all the time.  And that's exhausting.

If this resonates with you, and you're struggling with taking on the role of supporter, possibly without warning, without training, and without specialist help, this is for you.

I've been a trauma therapist for over fifteen years, and I know without a doubt, that one of the most important factors in recovery from trauma is to have support from others, from real people, not just professionals.  Friends and family who know what's needed, and who know how to help, and who know what to do and what not to do.

That is why this toolkit is for you, the supporter, rather than for the person recovering from trauma.  In it, I help you understand what's going on, give you the words to say and what to do (and what not to say or do), and I hold your hand whilst you find your way, helping someone who is finding THEIR way out of the aftermath of trauma.
